FULLERTON, California (CNN) -- The start of the appeal process in the custody battle for O.J. Simpson's two young children has begun, CNN has learned.

The Browns, who are the children's grandparents and the parents of Simpson's slain ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson, filed an appeal notice Tuesday.

Brown family attorney Natasha Roit said the family plans to use the verdict in the Simpson civil trial to try to overturn an earlier custody decision that granted the former football star full custody of his children, Sydney, 11, and Justin, 8.

Simpson had no immediate comment on the appeal, his lawyer Bernard Leckie said.
