Manhattan may get additional area code
March 1, 1997 ALBANY, New York (CNN) -- Manhattan may soon have to be split into two area codes because the borough is running out of numbers, members of the New York's state Public Utilities Commission were told Friday. Telephone company Nynex officials told the commission that demand for Manhattan's 212 area code has tripled in the last four years. Nynex outlined three options for the area code change: all new phone service requests would receive a new area code; Manhattan would be divided either east-west or north-south, with a different code on each side; or some numbers in 212 would be transferred to 718, currently serving the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. The last option would only hold out for about a year, Nynex officials said. The commission will hold public hearings, and plans to select one of the options by the fall.
