Bill would stop non-Americans from buying guns in U.S.
February 28, 1997Web posted at: 3:31 p.m. EST (2031 GMT) WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A bill to prohibit non-Americans from buying guns in the United States is now before the U.S. Senate, a response to Sunday's deadly shooting at New York's Empire State Building. One person was killed and six others were wounded when Palestinian Ali Abu Kamal opened fire with a semiautomatic handgun he bought last month in Florida. Kamal then killed himself. Senate sponsors of the bill introduced on Thursday said they hoped it would close loopholes in current law. The measure would prohibit anyone who had entered the United States on a non-immigrant visa from possessing firearms. Exceptions would be made for diplomats, hunters or marksmen taking part in shooting competitions. Related story:
