Aviation commission to address safety concerns next week

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security next Wednesday will address the air traffic system and aging aircraft, CNN has learned.
The commission, which is chaired by Vice President Al Gore, will call for accelerating the use of the global positioning satellite system in U.S. airspace and ultimately linking GPS and the air traffic control system to provide better and safer separation for domestic flights.
The commission will recommend that the Federal Aviation Administration adopt new protocols for dealing with the safety of aging aircraft. The hulls of older aircraft now require extensive inspections if they are to continue in service.
The Commission also is expected to propose other recommendations including: stepped-up security at airports, positive bag matching, profiling of passengers to eliminate possible terrorist threats and electronic bomb detection devices at major airports.
