Old cat fat with asparagus on 32nd birthday
February 6, 1997Web posted at: 12:00 a.m. EST AUSTIN, Texas (CNN) -- How long does it take to live nine lives, anyway?
"Grandpa Rex's Allen" is trying to find out. As of Monday, he was 32 years old and still purring. That translates into 160 human years.
A feline specialty magazine hails him as the nation's oldest cat. Adopted from an animal shelter when he was 5 years old, Grandpa shares his home with 19 other felines. All enjoyed his birthday cake, topped with tuna and asparagus. Owner Jake Perry credits Grandpa's long life to a daily diet of vegetables and exercise. And Grandpa is only two years away from becoming the oldest cat in world history. CNN affiliate KTBC contributed to this report.
