Police make arrest in California bombing case
February 2, 1997 VALLEJO, California (CNN) -- Police made an arrest Sunday in bombings that struck a courthouse and bank in the past week, and they recovered explosives in a plot they surmise was designed to subvert the local criminal justice system. The suspect, who remains unidentified while the investigation continues, was arrested late Saturday night in a residential area in Vallejo. At least two other suspects are being sought, with numerous search warrants served, Police Chief Robert Nichelini said in a Sunday afternoon news conference. "It is our belief that this was a deliberate attempt to stop the criminal justice system from operating in Solano County," Nichelini said. Nobody was hurt in the bombings, which tore a 3-foot crater in the Solano County courthouse Thursday and damaged three automatic tellers outside a Wells Fargo bank last Sunday. Police speculated the bombing was not the work of a militia group or terrorists, and the incidents are not connected to any group outside of the former Navy town northeast of San Francisco. "We believe these bombings should stop," {after the arrests}, Nichelini said. "We're not sure if all explosives have been recovered. We're working on that now." Related stories:
