3 die in Army helicopter crash
February 1, 1997 FORT RUCKER, Alabama (CNN) -- A flight instructor and two student pilots on an Army training exercise were killed late Friday when their UH-1H Iroquois helicopter crashed in a field late Friday. Army spokesman Bill Hayes said a search began when the crew failed to make a routine position report about 12:30 a.m. EST., after leaving Fort Rucker. The wreckage and bodies were found Saturday morning in a rural area about two miles east of Samson, Alabama. The cause of the crash wasn't yet known. The names of the victims were not immediately released, pending notification of families. Ft. Rucker, in southeast Alabama, is used by the Army for training helicopter pilots.
