WHITE PLAINS, New York (CNN) -- The wife of noted scientist Yakov Gluzman was convicted Thursday of taking part in the ax murder and dismemberment of her estranged husband.

Prosecutors say Rita Gluzman enlisted her cousin, Vladimir Zelenin, in a plot to kill her husband because he was seeking a divorce. The defense claims Zelenin killed the husband alone on April 6.

The plot unraveled the next day when Zelenin, 40, of Fair Lawn, New Jersey, was caught dumping Gluzman's body parts into the Passaic River in New Jersey.

Mrs. Gluzman, 48, of Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, fled the Soviet Union for Israel in 1970. Her husband joined her a year later, after she lobbied the United Nations and Congress for his release. He worked under Nobel Prize-winning biologist James Watson.
