Family digs out after Utah avalanche
January 23, 1997Web posted at: 11:00 p.m. EST PROVO, Utah (CNN) -- A 25-foot deep wall of snow collapsed near the Sundance resort Thursday, crashing into a home and burying a mother and her 4-year-old child, said Utah County Sheriff's Lt. Dick Casto. The woman's husband was able to dig out his wife and together they dug out the child. The mother and child were taken to a local hospital, where officials listed them in good condition.
Casto said a number of roads were closed as the snow swept down a mountain and into the residential area. He said those roads would remain closed while the sheriff's department conducted avalanche prevention patrols.
