Reed predicts Constitutional amendment on prayer
January 20, 1997Web posted at: 1:30 a.m. EST WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The executive director of the Christian Coalition Sunday said his organization will renew efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution to allow prayer in public schools. Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Ralph Reed said his organization will present to Congress within 30 days a "religious freedom amendment." He said the measure would make it unconstitutional to discriminate against someone because of the context of speech, for example, a prayer offered voluntarily in a noncompulsory setting in a public school. He said he is unsure if the measure has enough votes for passage this year, but thinks Congress is moving in that direction. Earlier in the program, he stated confidently that the country and the president were moving toward their agenda. Related stories:
