GOP congresswoman pushes for balanced budget
January 18, 1997 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Freshman Congresswoman Kay Granger of Texas touted the Republican plan Saturday to balance the federal budget, saying the concept is "more than just smart accounting," and should be the new Congress' first priority. "Balancing the budget will improve the quality of life for all Americans," she said in the Republicans' weekly radio address. She contended that the change would reduce the cost of a typical American home by $37,000 and also make college educations more affordable.
Granger urged passage of a Constitutional amendment requiring the budget to be balanced. However, to fill the void until that can be done, she said she and Democratic Rep. Gary Condit of California had introduced the Balanced Budget Requirement Act. "A balanced-budget amendment will stop Washington from wasting America's money," she said. "Those wasted dollars belong in your pocket because you'll spend them better than Washington can."
