Source: Guest made 911 call from Ramsey home
Incident occurred days before child's death
January 10, 1997 BOULDER, Colorado (CNN) -- Police may have found an explanation for a 911 call placed from the home of JonBenet Ramsey three days before the 6-year-old was found strangled in the basement. According to The Washington Post, which quoted an unnamed source, Boulder police have been told the call was made by a drunken guest attending a Christmas party hosted by the child's parents. The Post reported Friday that the source close to the family described the call as "irrelevant." The December 23 call ended before the police dispatcher could talk to the person on the line. After calling back and getting voice mail, police sent an officer to the home, according to police records examined Thursday by The Associated Press. The officer left minutes later and did not file a report.
Three days later on December 26, police were called back to the Ramsey home by Patricia Ramsey, who said her daughter was missing and that she had found a three-page ransom note on a stairway. The investigation into JonBenet's killing is now in its third week. Authorities have not disclosed whether they have a prime suspect and have been secretive about the progress of their investigation. On Thursday night, Boulder Police Chief Thomas Koby attempted to calm local fears about a possible serial killer and quell the frenzy of speculation about the crime. "Prejudging and media hype have never solved a crime," he said. The chief said the killing was mostly likely not the work of a serial killer. Interview transcript:
