Clarence Thomas drops speech to avoid NAACP protest
January 8, 1997Web posted at: 11:15 a.m. EST WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas withdrew his offer to speak next week at a youth banquet in Delaware after the NAACP threatened to organize a demonstration against him. The NAACP opposed Thomas' nomination to the high court because of his opposition to affirmative action programs. Thomas sent a letter Tuesday to the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware saying he did not object to peaceful demonstrations but did not think it "prudent or wise" to expose the children to the demonstration.
