Mattel to pull Cabbage Patch dolls from shelves

$40 refund for unhappy owners

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Toy maker Mattel Inc. Monday announced plans to pull its Cabbage Patch Kids Snacktime Kids Dolls from store shelves and stop production of the doll. The company also said it will offer a $40 refund to dissatisfied owners of the toy.

The safety of the popular doll has come under question following 35 cases where the battery operated dolls have chewed up girls' hair.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission tested the dolls and found they did not pose a serious safety hazard. However, the commission's chairman applauded Mattel's move Monday.

"We recognize that these incidents can be upsetting to children and adults, and we are pleased with the actions being taken by Mattel," CPSC chairman Ann Brown said.

Mattel said more than 500,000 Cabbage Patch Kids Snacktime Kids dolls have been sold.
