Accused FBI spy denied bail
December 23, 1996Web posted at: 10:10 p.m. EST WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Accused spy Earl Edwin Pitts lost his bid for bail Monday when a federal judge decided his risk of flight was too high. Government prosecutors say Pitts, a 13-year FBI veteran, spied for Russia and the Soviet Union. He was arrested last week and promptly indicted on 12 counts of espionage-related crimes. Pitts, 43, appeared at the bail hearing in U.S. District Court, but did not speak. He was scheduled to be arraigned next week and was expected to plead not guilty. No trial date has been set.
