Indy legend Bobby Unser and friend found safe
December 22, 1996 CHAMA, New Mexico (CNN) -- Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Unser and a friend were found safe Sunday and appeared to be in good condition, police said. The two men had been reported missing after they failed to return from a snowmobiling venture near the Colorado-New Mexico border. Police said Unser, 63, and Robert Gaynor, 36, hiked about 7 miles to a small town in Colorado after experiencing problems with their snowmobiles. They reached the town around 3 a.m. Sunday. Both men were being taken to a hospital for observation. Unser is a member of a family whose name has become synonymous with the Indy 500, winning it nine times. His brother, Al Unser, won the 500 four times and Al's son, Al Unser Jr., has won it twice.
