Baboon marrow patient better, though treatment 'failed'
December 14, 1996 EMERYVILLE, California (CNN) -- A year later, there are few conclusive results from an experimental baboon bone marrow transplant for AIDS patient Jeff Getty -- except that he is making long-range plans again. Tests showed cells from the baboon, which is immune to AIDS, stayed in Getty's system just two weeks, not long enough for any measurable lasting effect. Getty credits the chemotherapy and radiation treatments he received in preparation for the surgery with making him better. Dr. Warner Greene of the Gladstone Institute called the bone marrow treatment a "bold experiment" that "clearly failed." CNN affiliate KRON contributed to this report.Related stories:
