Marine sentenced to death
December 6, 1996
CAMP PENDLETON, California (CNN) -- A Marine sergeant who killed his executive officer and seriously wounded his commanding officer has been sentenced to death by lethal injection.
If the sentence is carried out, Sgt. Jessie Quintanilla would be the first Marine to be executed since 1817.
A jury of 12 Marines reached its decision on the verdict Thursday for the March 5 attack at Camp Pendleton. Last month, Quintanilla was found guilty of murder and eight other charges.
The death sentence will automatically be appealed. Quintanilla will be transferred to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where his appeal will be reviewed.
