In other news ...L.A. district attorney race tight as final votes are counted
November 8, 1996Web posted at: 11:30 p.m. EST LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Gil Garcetti Friday evening held a slight lead over challenger John Lynch in the Los Angeles County District Attorney's race, with votes still being counted. With more than 150,000 absentee ballots still tallied, Garcetti lead with 50.16 percent and Lynch was close behind with 49.83% as of Friday morning. Garcetti's lead is less than 7,000 votes, and absentee balloots are checked by hand, a time-consuming process. The registrar has four weeks after the election to complete the count. Garcetti's popularity among voters dropped when prosecutors failed to convict O.J. Simpson in a double-murder case last year. Related story:
