Whites commit most hate crimes
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Newly released FBI figures show hate crimes last year were perpetrated by whites against blacks in the United States twice as often as hate crimes were committed by blacks.
Local law enforcement agencies reported nearly 3,000 incidents of anti-black crime to the FBI during 1995. Only 1,226 anti-white hate crimes were reported during the same period.
Although this is roughly the same ratio found in each of the three years such statistics have been compiled, the FBI cautioned against drawing comparisons from previous years. Agencies representing only 75 percent of the U.S. population reported figures for 1995; for 1994, agencies covering only 58 percent of the population reported hate crimes to the FBI.
