Supreme Court to hear appeal by ex-asbestos makers

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Supreme Court Friday agreed to hear an appeal by 20 former asbestos manufacturers of a appellate court ruling that threw out a proposed $1.3 billion settlement, involving thousands of personal injury claims.

A U.S. appeals court in Philadelphia ruled last May to throw out the settlement. It said the settlement could lead to the unfair treatment of people with future claims -- people exposed to asbestos who have not yet become sick.

The former asbestos makers argued that tens of thousands of claims would be filed against them in federal and state courts because of the appeals court's decision, and nobody would collect a settlement because of the resulting legal quagmire. Opponents of the settlement say it would keep any person who gets an asbestos-related illness in the future from filing a claim against the asbestos industry.
