October 31, 1996 Suspects plead innocent to LA freeway attacksLOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Two men pleaded innocent Wednesday to charges stemming from a series of attacks on Los Angeles freeways in which the windows of more than 250 cars and trucks were shattered. Jose Soto, 21, and Hugo Hernandez, 22, remained in custody after municipal court Judge Michael Kellog set bail at $140,000 each. They were charged with 14 counts each, including vandalism, assault and conspiracy. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for November 12. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office tied Soto and Hernandez to attacks on September 23, October 4 and October 7 on the Santa Monica Freeway. Nobody was hurt in the attacks, which police said stopped after the two were arrested October 9. Related stories:
