Report: Air bag caused death of fetus
October 30, 1996 ARLINGTON, Virginia (CNN) -- Federal safety officials have concluded that an air bag caused the death of an 8-month-old fetus in a 1994 car accident, according to a report in USA Today. The fetus died after a low-speed car crash in Georgia. The pregnant woman was driving the vehicle. Airbags have saved 1,136 lives between 1986 and 1995, but the bags have killed at least 28 children and 19 adult drivers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This is apparently the first case linking an air bag to the death of a fetus. Related stories:
