Kindergartner suspended for bringing beeper to school
NEWPORT NEWS, Virginia (CNN) -- School officials have suspended a kindergartner for bringing a beeper from home and showing it to classmates during a field trip.
Kim Hudson, Ryan Hudson's mother, said the 5-year-old took the beeper along because he liked the sound it made. School officials defended the suspension, saying that school rules expressly forbid students from bringing pagers into school.
Hudson's suspension is the latest in a series of disciplinary actions -- for seemingly minor violations -- based on a nationwide trend for schools to adopt "zero tolerance" policies on drugs and weapons.
