U.S. deports record number

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. immigration officials say nearly 70,000 illegal aliens, many of them criminals, have been deported during the last year.

Most of those deported came from Mexico and Central America, according to a government report to be released Tuesday. The report says most of the illegal aliens were caught in California, Texas and Arizona.

Recent reports have criticized the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service for naturalizing almost 100,000 criminals a year. The INS is working with the FBI to identify immigrants with criminal records before they become citizens.
