WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Despite several high-profile and deadly crashes, 1996 has been a very good year for air safety, the Air Force said Wednesday. The accident rate for 1996 was lower than in any year since 1975 except for 1991, the year of the Persian Gulf War, when hundreds of low-risk transport flights pushed up the number of flight hours and lowered the average accident rate. Earlier this year, an Air Force T-43 in April crashed in Croatia, killing Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 34 others. The accident, the worst for the Air Force in 20 years, highlighted questions about Air Force safety. Related stories:
