Government agrees to dispose of nuclear fuelOctober 22, 1996Web posted at: 10:45 p.m. EDT WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The Clinton administration said Tuesday it will not challenge a court order to dispose of nearly 30,000 tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste from civilian reactors, the Energy Department said Tuesday. A federal appeals court ordered the agency to begin accepting the fuel by early 1998. At issue is where to put the waste, now stored at commercial reactors in 31 states. A permanent storage facility will not be available for at least 14 years. The disposal of spent nuclear fuel that has been building up at more than 100 nuclear reactors across the country is expected to become one of the key environmental issues in the next Congress.
