Simpson jury selection nears completion
October 17, 1996 SANTA MONICA, California (CNN) -- Jury selection in the O.J. Simpson civil trial could be completed by Thursday or Friday, clearing the way for opening statements on Monday. Through Wednesday, the list of prospective jurors consisted of eight whites, three African-Americans and one Hispanic, although any of them could be dismissed later. On Wednesday, lawyers for the families of murder victims Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman excluded five black prospective jurors by peremptory challenge -- a way to remove them without stating a reason. Simpson's lead attorney, Robert Baker, complained to Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki that the plaintiffs were targeting blacks. The defense used three of its peremptory challenges to remove three whites.
