D.C. suburb bans public smoking

FRIENDSHIP HEIGHTS, Maryland (CNN) -- The Friendship Heights Village Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to ban smoking in all public places -- inside or out.

The mayor of Friendship Heights, Alfred Muller, said the issue is no different than banning the consumption of alcohol in public places.

The Montgomery County Council will have the final say on the proposed ban. Friendship Heights is a primarily high-rise community north of Washington, D.C.
