HOLLYWOOD, Florida (CNN) -- The main suspect in the unsolved 1981 murder of 6-year-old Adam Walsh is dead. Ottis Toole died of cirrhosis of the liver September 15 in a prison hospital in north Florida, according to police. Toole had twice confessed and twice recanted that he killed Walsh after the boy was abducted from a shopping mall in Hollywood, Florida. The boy's severed head was found two weeks later in a canal 125 miles north of his home. Toole, who was never charged in the Walsh case, died while serving sentences for other murders and arson. The highly publicized Walsh case helped lead to the creation of the Fox television series "America's Most Wanted," hosted by Adam's father, John Walsh. Police said the investigation remains open.
