Report: Federal tobacco probe broadens
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A federal investigation into possible perjury charges against top tobacco executives has expanded into a broader inquiry into whether industry officials lied or misled Congress and other government agencies, the Washington Post reported Sunday.
The paper quoted unidentified sources saying the FBI and Justice Department used police tactics similar to those used to break up drug rings in getting current and former tobacco company employees to turn over information on their bosses.
The focus of the inquiries includes tobacco industry practices in general and, specifically, statements made about the addictive nature of tobacco.

The fire broke out early in the afternoon in the San Francisquito Canyon. Firefighters had no estimate of containment.
No structures were immediately threatened, but fire engines were stationed near a Department of Water and Power facility to provide protection if needed, according to U.S. Forest spokesman Bruce Quintelier.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Firefighters make progress against Montana blaze
BILLINGS, Montana (CNN) -- Firefighters battling a two-week-old blaze in the Custer National Forest are making some progress, officials said Sunday. Residents of two evacuated towns were allowed to return to their homes Saturday night.
The 12,800-acre fire has not spread since Saturday, said Bill Pidanick, a spokesman for the U.S. Forest Service.
"It's looking real good," Pidanick said, adding firefighters may able to estimate when they will be able to contain it by late Sunday. "They made a lot of headway."
About 815 firefighters from several states are battling the blaze near the Montana/Wyoming border. It has destroyed 34 vacation homes and three other buildings.
