Perry makes low-profile visit to Saudi Arabia
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry left
Washington Monday on a mission to Saudi Arabia to discuss
the repositioning of U.S. troops to locations that are easier
to defend.
The decision to relocate troops was made following last month's
terrorist attack on a U.S. air base in Dahran, which killed
19 U.S. Airmen and injured hundreds.
Pentagon officials would not confirm the Secretary's plans on
the record, but sources told CNN that Perry will meet with
Saudi Defense Minister Prince Sultan and possibly with the
Saudi monarch, King Fahd.
The visit will reportedly include discussions on transferring
U.S. forces to installations that provide more security for
them, as well as who will pay for the transfer and cost of
maintaining the troops there. It also may cover any progress
that may have been made in the investigation of the bombing.
