Explosion rocks Olympic Park in Atlanta
Injuries reportedJuly 27, 1996 ATLANTA (CNN) -- An explosion rang through the Centennial Park in the center of the city of Atlanta Friday night. There are reports several people were injured. The explosion occurred near a stage where music was playing at about 1:20 a.m. ET. Witnesses said the power at the stage went out and audience members fell injured. Ambulances and police vehicles immediately rushed to the area. Officials say they do not know what the cause of the explosion was. Security guards closed the park immediately and ordered people out of the area, including the media. The park was filled with thousands of Olympics visitors. A German TV network was in the midst of interviewing U.S. simmer Janet Evans when the explosion occurred; it jolted Evans and the German crew; people fled the area. The explosion could clearly be heard throughout the downtown area; it sent people scattering.
