Nuclear research lab shuts down pending safety review
July 16, 1996 LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico (CNN) -- Officials at the Los Alamos National Laboratory are suspending almost all work following a recent series of accidents at the country's premier nuclear research lab. Last week, a student was electrocuted at the facility, which produced the first nuclear bomb. The accident was one of four fatal or near-fatal mishaps during the last 19 months. Officials said that an internal safety review will be conducted, although none of the accidents affected research and testing at the facility.
