Wildfires rage in Southern California
July 13, 1996Web posted at: 11:55 p.m. EDT LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Some 900 firefighters were gaining ground Saturday on a wildfire scorching 1,500 acres northwest of Los Angeles, while other firefighters battling a 400-acre blaze in Angeles National Forest had to contend with angry wasps as well as flames. The larger blaze was sparked by lightning on Thursday, and the second fire started Friday when a power line was hit by a falling limb during tree-clearing. The flames forced the evacuation of about 200 people from 90 recreational cabins in the forest.
