Central Park beating victim regains consciousness

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The 32-year-old woman who was severely beaten in Central Park two and a half weeks ago has begun responding to questions with head movements, The New York Times reported Friday.

The woman, who has not been identified publicly, first showed signs of awareness on Wednesday. Police have arrested 22- year-old John Royster, who allegedly confessed to the Central Park beating and attacks on three other women.

Justice Department accuses INS of deception

MIAMI (CNN) -- A Justice Department report has accused the Immigration and Naturalization Service of deceiving a Congressional task force in order to hide overcrowding at a detention center and give the appearance of a more efficient operation.

Additionally, The New York Times reported Friday that four senior field managers have been reassigned to nonsupervisory duties after being accused of obstructing the congressional delegation's inquiry.

Five dead in Minnesota over property dispute

SAUK CENTRE, Minnesota (CNN) -- A family of four and their next door neighbor are dead after an argument over a property line ended in an apparent murder-suicide. The shootings occurred 10 minutes after a county deputy had visited to try to calm the situation.

Police said 72-year-old Paul Wallace Crawford was arguing with Warren Schloegl and Schloegl's wife Marcella over a recently completed survey of the neighbors' property line. Police say Crawford shot the Schloegls and their two children, ages 11 and 12, to death and then killed himself.

Diesel fuel leaks from barge in Mississippi River

ALLIANCE, Louisiana (CNN) -- A barge accident Friday morning has dumped diesel fuel into the Mississippi River, Coast Guard officials said.

Two barges -- one carrying two tanks of diesel fuel oil -- collided south of New Orleans, tearing a 25-foot gash in one of the tanks. The Coast Guard and a private cleanup contractor are working to contain the spill, which has spread 12 miles downriver from the accident site.
