WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The National Transportation Safety Board has advised the FAA to take immediate action to permanently ban the transporting of chemical oxygen generators as cargo on airliners.
The Department of Transportation recently banned the shipment of the canisters for the rest of the year in the wake of a deadly ValuJet DC-9 crash in which the devices are suspected of playing a role.
The recommendations were sent in a letter to the FAA Friday afternoon.
Medical examiners have now identified the remains of 24 of the 110 victims aboard the flight, which crashed three weeks ago in the Florida Everglades. The victims' names have not been released publicly.
