WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former U.S. Congressman Dan Rostenkowski was reported in good condition at Washington's Walter Reed Army Medical Center after undergoing surgery for prostate cancer Thursday.
A hospital spokesman said the 68-year-old Illinois Democrat was recovering from a "radical prostatectomy," or removal of the entire prostate gland. Doctors described the procedure as "very successful" and say they believe they removed all of the cancer.
Last month, the former chairman of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, accepted a plea bargain on federal corruption charges. He pleaded guilty to two charges and was sentenced to 17 months in prison with a $100,000 fine. Eleven other charges were dropped. It's unclear when he will begin serving the sentence.
