Clinton asks GOP to 'break the logjam'

For the first time, President Clinton now says he will support the Republican proposal to repeal temporarily his 4.3 cent gasoline tax -- but only if the Republicans allow what he wants: a separate bill on raising the minimum wage.

"I am offering a way to break the logjam," said Clinton. "I will be glad to sign both bills. They ought to vote them out clean. At least they should give us a clean vote on the minimum wage. That's what I think should be done."

Tactics keep minimum wage issue in forefront

Senate Democrats blocked efforts to repeal a 1993 gasoline tax Tuesday, and the proposal may not come to the floor any time this week.

Democrats initially opposed the vote because they were not allowed to add amendments to the bill. But they also objected to a Republican proposal that combined the tax rollback with a minimum wage increase because it also contained legislation allowing employers to meet with employees outside of collective bargaining, which Democrats view as anti-labor.

Daschle concedes gas tax repeal to GOP

But not balanced budget amendment

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, conceded the gas tax issue to Republicans on Monday, saying Democrats will not fight the Republican effort to repeal the 4.3 cent per gallon gas tax increase passed as a deficit-reduction measure in 1993.
