Severe weather lashes Midwest states

Web posted at: 12:55 a.m. EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (CNN) -- An outbreak of tornadoes and baseball-sized hail spread damage across a large section of the nation's heartland Friday.
In Kankakee County, Illinois, about 45 miles south of Chicago, authorities confirmed tornado touchdowns and a reported a large area was without power. "Officers are checking damage to barns and garages," said Sgt. Brian Zasada of the Kankakee County Sheriff's Department.
Morgan County, Indiana, reported extensive damage and at least one confirmed tornado in the Northeast part of the county.
The National Weather Service said Illinois and Indiana have borne the brunt of the storms, but that damage could be expected across a wide range of the nation's midsection.
At 10 p.m. EDT, tornado warnings were still in effect across Indiana, Missouri, Arkansas and Illinois. Tornado watches also were issued in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, southern Wisconsin, Missouri, and Arkansas. Forecasters said thunderstorms could hit parts of Ohio as well.
The National Weather Service has been telling local authorities to sound their tornado sirens so as to warn local residents to seek shelter in basements and low-lying areas.
