Washington (CNN) -- A U.S. sailor was killed and four others injured Thursday when a cable on an aircraft carrier's flight deck snapped and struck a group of sailors.
The accident happened aboard the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in the Gulf of Thailand. An F-14A came in for a landing on the deck and the arresting cable broke.
The arresting cable stops the landing plane on the deck when the plane's tailhook latches on to it. Arresting cables are extremely strong two-inch thick steel cables.
The plane apparently landed safely. It was unclear if the plane had to abort its effort to land and circle the ship before returning for a landing.
The names of the casualties have not been released.
