EL SEGUNDO, California (CNN) -- A former employee of Hughes Aircraft was arrested after he walked into the company's plant and opened fire with a handgun, wounding three workers, police said Wednesday.

The 62-year-old gunman, whose name wasn't immediately disclosed, critically injured a security guard and slightly injured two employees, police Capt. Ron Green said.

A handgun was used during the shootings, police said.

The security guard was in surgery and the two other victims were believed to be in stable condition.

Green said the gunman came out of the main gate in the complex Wednesday morning, holding a handgun to the head of a male hostage. A police officer ordered him to surrender and the gunman complied, the captain said.

Hughes Aircraft spokesman Don O'Neal said he believed the gunman left the company in 1993 but does not think the man was fired.

Van Duong, a witness, told CNN reporter Jennifer Auther that the gunman walked in, then told everybody to "get down." Duong said that when no one complied, the gunman said, "Goddammit, didn't you hear me, I said get down." After that, Duong said, the gunman pulled out a gun and he heard a gunshot.

The gunman first shot an unarmed guard, then went upstairs to a computer room and wounded two Hughes employees, one in the shoulder and the other in the hip, said Hughes spokesman Emery Wilson Jr. A company spokesman said none of Hughes employees interviewed so far recognized the gunman.
