WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Clinton officially kicked off the spring season as he and Hillary Rodham Clinton welcomed thousands of children and their parents to the annual White House Easter Egg roll Monday.
The Clintons presided over the traditional four-hour egg hunt on the manicured South Lawn. Children scampered about, looking for hidden eggs and posing for pictures with storybook Easter characters.
The Easter egg roll celebrated its 187th year this year. It was begun by James Madison, the sixth president.

In addition to playing host, the Clintons signed 7,000 hard-boiled eggs and 27,000 wooden souvenir eggs that were given away at the end of the egg roll.
"I always look forward to this every year ... This is a wonderful day for all the children," Clinton said.
However, despite the color and festivities, this year's event was more somber than usual.
The Clintons are mourning the death of Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 32 other Americans who were killed in a plane crash last week in Croatia.
