CORONADO, California (CNN) -- One crew member was killed, another was missing, and two were injured after a U.S. Navy jet crashed during routine flight operations off the coast of southern California Saturday, the Navy said.
The EA-6B "Prowler" aircraft was operating off the USS Kitty Hawk carrier when it crashed at 3:05 p.m. EST in the Pacific Ocean, about 150 miles from the California coast.
The EA-6B's mission is to jam enemy radar and radio communications to protect ships and strike aircraft.
The jet was part of the Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 135, based at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington state.
