NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- A military jet crashed into a residential-commercial neighborhood moments after takeoff today, exploding into a "huge ball of flame" and setting some homes ablaze, authorities said.

There was no immediate word on casualties. Fire officials said three or four homes went up in flames.

"It took off, went straight up and straight down," said Martha Bradley, a spokeswoman at Nashville International Airport. The crash occurred about 10:50 a.m. EST.

She said the F-14 jet, apparently based at the Tennessee Air National Guard base at the airport, crashed about 1.5 miles from the end of the runway.

"There were houses involved," said a spokeswoman for Police Chief Emmett Turner.

Fire Dept. Lieutenant Wayne Renardson said his department responded to reports that a plane had crashed and exploded into a "huge ball of flame" and setting fires that "involved" three or four homes.

The F-14 is a carrier-based fighter jet with a two-person crew. There is no word as to whether the crew ejected.
