Millennium Dome tickets go on sale

    September 23, 1999
Web posted at: 3:57 p.m. EDT (1957 GMT)

LONDON (CNN) -- Tickets have just gone on sale for Britain's mammoth Y2K attraction: the Millennium Dome in Greenwich. The site is scheduled to open on New Year's Eve and tickets are, for the time being, available through March 31, 2000.

The Dome, with its massive umbrella-like fabric roof supposedly strong enough to support a jumbo jet, is still under construction. If all goes according to plan, Queen Elizabeth will be on hand to open it minutes before the end of 1999. Organizers have not given much detail on what will be inside, but the central element will be a show -- performed several times daily -- conceived by Mark Fisher and Peter Gabriel.

Dome admission costs 20 pounds (US $33) for an adult and 16.50 pounds ($27) for a child between age 5 and 15. There are special discounts for families of five, seniors and students. An estimated 12 million visitors are expected throughout 2000.

CNN Correspondent Nic Robertson contributed to this report
