MIAMI (CNN) -- Hurricane Floyd has caused Carnival Cruise Lines to change
the itineraries of two of its ships.
The 2,200 passengers aboard the Fantasy departed Port Canaveral Sunday for
what was to have been a four-day cruise to the Bahamas. It went to Freeport
Monday morning, but stayed only half a day. Instead of continuing to Nassau, it
has headed toward Key West, where it will spend the day Monday, said a
spokeswoman for the cruise line.
The Carnival Destiny's 2,800 passengers departed Miami Sunday for what was
to have been a seven-day tour through the eastern Caribbean. Instead, it was sent to the western Caribbean. "Same number of ports, just a different region of the Caribbean," the spokeswoman said.
"We reserve the right to alter our itinerary for any reason, and, in a
case like this, where ... nobody really wants to sail into a hurricane,
generally the guests are pretty understanding," she said.
The U.S. Department of State has issued a Travel Warning for the Bahamas, due to the storm. According to the statement released Monday: "Private American citizens should consider their situations and take those actions they deem appropriate for their own safety, including departing the country."
