U.S. State Department issues caution on traveling in ChinaMay 28, 1999 WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The upcoming anniversary of the Tiananmen Square demonstrations in Beijing -- and the recent NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade -- are prompting the U.S. State Department to caution American citizens traveling in China. A public announcement from the department reads: "In view of the 10th anniversary of the June 4 Tiananmen Square demonstrations, as well as lingering tension resulting from Chinese reaction to the mistaken May 7 NATO bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade, American citizens should exercise caution while living or traveling in China." The State Department says it has no knowledge of planned demonstrations or specific threats against Americans in China, but it urges U.S. citizens to "be aware of Chinese sensitivities during the anniversary period, and avoid areas where demonstrations are in progress."
