WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. State Department is urging Americans traveling in Indonesia to exercise caution due to the increased threat of demonstrations and violence prior to elections next month.

"The political and economic situation is unsettled, and is likely to remain so, leading up to the June 7 parliamentary elections and the selection of a new president a few months later," said a State Department announcement.

"Political campaigning began officially on May 19th and there is an increased likelihood of demonstrations and unrest throughout Indonesia in coming months. American citizens should consider carefully whether to travel to Indonesia during this period."

The State Department says although U.S. citizens have not been targeted, it recommends that travelers exercise caution.

"American citizens in all parts of Indonesia should exercise prudence and common sense, and avoid demonstrations and other situations that could turn violent."

The State Department also recommends that travelers to Indonesia ensure that passports and important papers are in order, in case it becomes necessary to leave the country quickly.

The U.S. embassy in Jakarta and Consulate General in Surbaya will remain open.
