(CNN) -- In this era of jet fuel and bullet trains, it's hard to imagine a time when simple heat and water powered a nation's travel. But steam locomotives were the primary mode of long-distance transportation in the United States at the beginning of the century.
Today, few remain. CNN rides the rails with one of the last -- through the scenic and rugged Donner Pass in California's Sierra Nevada mountains -- and meets passengers for whom trains are not just a way to get around, but a passion. All aboard for the trip.
