But steam locomotives were the primary mode of long-distance transportation in the United States at the beginning of the century. Today, few remain. CNN rides the rails with one of the last -- through the scenic and rugged Donner Pass in California's Sierra Nevada mountains -- and meets passengers for whom trains are not just a way to get around, but a passion.
